City Park, Pripyat

Visited in 2014 + 2015

Named after the nearby Pripyat River and is the ninth nuclear city in the Soviet Union. Pripyat was founded on 4 February 1970 to serve the nearby Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. It was officially proclaimed a city in 1979, and had grown to a population of 49,360 by the time it was evacuated, a few days after the 26 April 1986 Chernobyl disaster.

Like most cities, also Pripyat has a city park. It is mostly known for the ferris wheel and the bumper cars behind the Palace of Culture. The Pripyat amusement park was an upcoming amusement park. It should be opened on May 1, 1986, in time for the May Day celebrations but the plans were interrupted when the Chernobyl disaster occurred a few kilometers away. The park was opened for a couple of hours on April 27 to keep the city people entertained before the announcement to evacuate the city was made. Today, the park, and in particular the Ferris wheel, are a symbol of the Chernobyl disaster.
